PERU:
Peru, like Ecuador, is home to wonders too numerous to count. Peru's most famous attraction is Machu Picchu, "the lost city of the Incas", discovered in 1911 by Hiram Bingham, the American archeologist and adventurer upon whom the film legend Indiana Jones is based. Actually, Machu Picchu was probably not a city at all. Some believe that it was a royal estate or religious retreat for the Inca elite - nobody knows for sure, since the Inca kept no written records and the Spanish never captured a member of the Inca historian guild. Machu Picchu's remote location, on a secondary road in nearly impassable terrain high in the cloud forest, has caused much speculation over the years and has encouraged many legends about why the city remained secret from mankind for over 400 years.
In addition to Machu Picchu, traveler's should visit: Lima, the capital of modern day Peru and the capital of all Spanish colonies in the colonial era; Cuzco, the ancient capital of the Inca empire; and Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake on Earth.
