A brief history
The Galapagos Islands were formed more than 5 million years ago as a consequence of undersea volcanic eruptions. In 1533 Tomas de Berlanga, a bishop of Panama , came to this beautiful archipelago and call it “Galápagos” (which is a Spanish synonym for turtle) because of the great amount of tortoises he saw in the place.
The Galapagos Islands were declared a National Park of Ecuador in 1959 , therefore this fragile ecosystem and especially its rare endemic species were subjected to protection until today . Then, in 1979 UNESCO emphasized the Galapagos on the list of World Heritage Site.
Almost all the most animals in Galapagos are from North, Central , South America and the Caribbean , sea lions and birds came from North America. Pink Flamingos and Darwin finches came from the Caribbean, boobies, cormorants, pelicans, giant tortoises, land iguanas, came from South America , penguins and sea lions came from Antarctica.
Galapagos natural wonders
Plants are the basis of all life in the Galapagos Islands. With over 560 native species of plants – plants that reached the islands by natural means – on the islands of which approximately one-third of the flora of Galapagos are endemic. It is as extraordinary as its wildlife. Many species are so different from others that are grouped in their own endemic genera. These include Scalesia, endemic ‘daisy tree’ which has evolved into a large number of different species.
Then, as for the fauna, marine and terrestrial wildlife exceeds the 600 native species such as giant turtles, tortoises, iguanas, lava lizards, sea lions, seals, penguins, dolphins, rays, sharks, variety of fish; many birds such as albatross, blue-footed boobies, frigate birds, cormorants, gulls, hawks, pelicans, flamingos and other unique of its kind.
