The Galapagos islands, situated around 600 miles west of the continent of Latin America, is very probably the best location to observe evolution in all of their purely natural magnificence.
Called, in Spanish, after the species which is without doubt the most popular of the island archipelago: The Galapagos Tortoise; the Galapagos offers a number of groups of minor dainty islands which are born of undersea volcanoes eruptions.
Located on the equator, the Galapagos gets all the bonuses of such a global position because the 16 islands have sunny climatic conditions all year round! If that wasn’t sufficient they are in the crossroads for two vitally important trade winds: The North East trade winds (from North & Central America) and the South East winds (coming from South America). All these winds are most likely exactly what started the influx of self-sufficient life on the island chain – and are believed to have been the agent responsible for the large woods spreading over the higher mountains of the islands.
These island of intense natural charm have generated the evolution of many diverse, and fairly unusual, habitats that have in turn made it possible for (or otherwise forced) the native wildlife, both plants and creatures as well, to develop in ways that to put it simply has some experts astonished.

The convergence of three major oceanic waters flow allow an unbelievable mix of marine life to Galapagos. The endemic Galapagos marine iguana is known as the only lizard to swim in the sea. In 1978 UNESCO nominated Galapagos since the very first World Heritage site. The movie Captain and Commander was filmed around the islands of Bartholomew and Santiago. The title ‘galapagos’, an old Spanish term for ‘saddle’, was originally employed by Bishop Tomas and his crew to spell out the giant tortoises but the name stuck. Due to the early presence of both English and Spanish populations in Galapagos, the Islands have both English and Spanish names.
Darwin sailed to Galapagos on board the HMS Beagle in September 1835, when he was 26 years old. During the five weeks he spent there, he moved to gather plants, stones, birds and insects. He detected the unusual life forms and their adaptations to the harsh environment. He noticed that it had been possible to distinguish which island a tortoise came from by the form of their shell. His most well-known study is of the numerous species of finches which inspired his revolutionary theory The Origin of Species, published in 1859.
