Galapagos Islands Cruise Itineraries
Every licensed vessel sailing the Galapagos follows a 15-day route established and approved by Galapagos National Park. During that period of time, a ship might not go to the same site twice, with the exclusion of the Charles Darwin Research Station on Santa Cruz. How lines segment the 15 days may fluctuate, but four-, five- and eight-day options are the norm. Passengers can frequently combine these sections into 11-, 12- and 15-day cruises.
All boats basically follow the same protocol, irrespective of itinerary: Island visits and extra-curricular tasks are done throughout the day, and also the majority of navigation is performed overnight.
All cruises begin or finish at one of two islands having an airport: Baltra, a U.S. military outpost during WWII turned Ecuadorian air base, or San Cristobal, the Galapagos’ second most populated island and home to the capital of their state, Puerto Baquerizo Moreno.
Because the method of cruising has been standardized, choosing the proper itinerary includes a whole lot to do with cruisers deciding which visitor sites are in their must-visit lists. Port research — especially photo searching — is key. Remember the longer the cruise, the farther west the ship will reach. That is not to say the western islands are far better — it’s a matter of personal taste. If you cruise is also an important consideration.
There is one major exception: “Live aboard” ships carrying experienced divers are the only craft to visit the northern islands, Darwin and Wolf, prime places for scuba enthusiasts. At Darwin, where there’s not any landing site, schools of hammerheads are known to congregate.
Most passengers will spend a day or two exploring Quito or Guayaquil pre or post-cruise. It’s basically necessary, provided the flight logistics.
Sierra Negra Volcano: Hiking enthusiasts are sure to love the chance of the steep ascent to the rim of Sierra Negra Volcano. The hike up takes approximately two hours with fantastic vistas all around. Horse riding provides a different perspective of the gorgeous area.
Moreno Point and Elizabeth Bay: Heading a little farther north, Moreno Point presents excellent dinghy excursions, complete with excellent bird-spotting opportunities. As an alternative, you can enjoy panoramic hiking through the lava stones and look for whale-tip sharks from the oceans. Climb into a little dinghy to explore the small islets off the coast of Elizabeth Bay, watching unique mangrove woods, celebrating penguins along with blue-footed boobies on the rocky rocks, and getting close to sea lions and various fish species using some snorkeling experiences.
Bolivar Channel: Many Isabela island cruises sail throughout the Bolivar Channel, a channel that separates Isabela Island and the neighboring Fernandina Island. The coldest waters in the Galapagos region, it is normal to see whales and dolphins swimming close to your cruise ship.
Vicente Roca Point: At the north of Isabela Island, Vicente Roca Point is a top spot for snorkeling and boating. The twin coves shield a variety of odd species, such as sunfish, seahorses, and puffer fish. Bird lovers will not be disappointed either, with terns, blue-footed boobies, and penguins, amongst others.
Galapagos Facts
The estimated age of these islands is between 4 and 10 million years. The Islands lie about the Nazca tectonic plate and are the plate’s main land mass. Intense heat caused by the plates being pushed apart leads to eruptions which create new volcanoes and eventually create new islands (‘Hot spot’ notion. There have been approximately 13 eruptions in Galapagos at the previous 100 years.
