When is the best time to visit the Galapagos?
Good Climatic conditions for visiting throughout every season. Galapagos is actually over the Equator but the climate is not really tropical. Temperatures vary from 69°-84°F / 21°-30°C.
Warm season is from January to June.
Dry period is from July to December.
The Galapagos Islands are possibly the most well-known wildlife-watching destination in the world.
This remote archipelago is a land of stark lava formations, cactus forests, lush green highlands, turquoise bays and quintessential tropical shores. But, best of all, it’s packed with wildlife at every turn. Within minutes -occasionally seconds- of landing onto this dot in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, you may be face-to-face using more strangely adventuresome and curious creatures than anywhere else on Earth.
Roughly 620 miles from the coast of Ecuador, and slap-bang around the equator, Darwin’s “Enchanted Isles” include a bunch of 13 “proper” volcanic islands (larger than four square miles) and six smaller islands along with more than 100 islets. Each one has its own unique atmosphere, distinctive landscape and inimitable wildlife.
You can see everything from penguins living in the tropics and boobies with bright blue feet to tool-using woodpecker finches and man frigate birds turning their wrinkled throat sacs in to extraordinary, fully inflated red balloons. 1 day you might be watching time-worn giant tortoises in the misty highlands, and the next you might be snorkeling with playful sea lions from crystal-clear water. You could be sunbathing on black lava rocks adjacent to prehistoric-looking marine iguanas or sitting with waved albatrosses as they play their bill-circling, swaggering courtship displays (they seem rather like Samurai warriors performing Lord of the Dance).
All this said, 170,000 vacationers visited the Galapagos last year so, not surprisingly, it’s starting to feel a little crowded. It is a high-profile place and a lot of individuals want to see it for themselves. The consequence of such an attack is that wildlife tourism is much more tightly controlled in the archipelago than anyplace else in the world. You’re only permitted to see tiny pockets of the national park, so you can disembark (from small ships) only at predetermined landing spots, you need to walk only on clearly marked trails in only disciplined little groups, and you must be accompanied by local certified guides. Regulating tourism with such military efficiency may feel extreme, but it is essential under the circumstances. Ultimately, though, there has to be a limit and in the long run, guest numbers might need to be capped.
Plan ahead in the event that you wish to see during the peak tourist times. Visiting out of those periods will still offer plenty of adventures and wildlife experiences, but costs might be reduced with fewer other tourists around.
With little variation in air and water temperatures throughout the entire year, and numerous species that are not migratory, an Isabela Island cruise is a fantastic experience at any time. Ordinarily, however, the waters are better between January and March, making this a perfect time for avid snorkeling fans. The driest months are generally between August and December, perfect for beach lovers.
Pay a visit to the Galapagos in January to watch green sea turtles arriving and laying eggs on the beaches, also in April to find the eggs hatching. July is the prime month for seeing whales off the western coast of Isabela Island. Bird spotters will likely prefer to see Isabela Island between August and March, once the number of migratory birds is at its summit. October is the breeding period for fur seals, whilst brown nodes are sexually active in November. December is the best month if you wish to witness the hatching of giant tortoises.
Before joining any Galapagos cruises, you will first need to create your way to mainland Ecuador. International flights usually arrive at the country’s capital city of Quito, even though it’s also possible to take an international flight to Guayaquil. Flights to the Galapagos Islands leave daily from both Quito and Guayaquil.
Baltra Island gets the biggest airport around the Galapagos Islands, however flights also arrive on San Cristobal Island. Your tour operator will typically arrange transfers from the airport to a cruise departure point from Baltra or by San Cristobal. Isabela Island Tours normally leave from Puerto Ayora, an important port on Santa Cruz Island.
Are there some immunizations recommended?
For the Galapagos Islands there are no recommended immunizations. If you, however, intend to spend additional time in Ecuador, particularly in the jungle, immunization is highly suggested. As this changes from time to time please check with your regional health office (or even the Institute for Tropical Diseases) a couple weeks ahead of your journey.
Will we need to exchange some money before we journey to Ecuador or once in the country?
Not if you have US dollars. In 2000, Ecuador adopted the US dollar as its official currency. Just be sure that you bring cash bills in great condition with you. If they have tears in them, they are likely to be denied.
