Due to the long distances involved, the only practical way to explore the Galapagos is by live-aboard ships, which travel between islands, largely at night, and create different stops every day. Over 80 boats are licensed to operate in the archipelago and also there are an infinite number of combinations of stops and paths. Most cruises go ashore twice per day: 10 total days on the ship typically means 20 shore landings, 10-20 snorkels, and several panga rides (pangas are small, open outboard-powered ships) to approximately 10 different islands.
Exploring on your own is much harder. Getting around separately is tricky and all visitors must be accompanied by a licensed naturalist guide at all landing websites. But four islands (Santa Cruz, San Cristobal, Floreana and Isabela) do have hotels of varying sizes and criteria and a few boat operators offer day-trips.
Following in Darwin’s footsteps calls for a trip from Quito or Guayaquil, on the mainland, to Baltra or San Cristobal. Some cruises leave from Baltra (the dock is a five-minute drive from the air terminal). Other people go out of Puerto Ayora, the tourist hub on Santa Cruz and a comparatively busy town, with a bank, ATM machine, taxis, pubs and even a cinema.
GalapagosInformation.com offers an assortment of tailor-made live-aboard tours on many different vessels carrying from 4 to 16 passengers.
Wildlife activities diverge greatly, and every month has its highlights. By way of instance, green turtles begin their egg-laying in January; penguins interact with swimmers on Bartolome largely from May until the end of September; humpback whales start to arrive at June; July through the end of September is the ideal period for most seabird action; peak pupping for sea lions is approximately August, while their pups perform aqua-aerobics with snorkelers at November; and December is the month to get hatching giant tortoise eggs. So, always there’s something happening.
The seas are usually calmer and clearer now of year (using 60ft-80ft visibility typical) and the water temperature averages 79° F (26°C), so this interval is ideal for snorkeling.
The cool, drier, windier year (with intermittent drizzle or mist) is from June to November. Sea temperatures in this time of year drop to as much as 66F (19C) and visibility often goes down to 30ft-50ft, whilst sea swells may make some landings catchy.
Plan ahead if you wish to visit during the high season. Visiting out of these periods will still provide plenty of experiences and wildlife experiences, but costs may be lower with fewer other tourists around.
With little variation in water and air temperatures throughout the entire year, and numerous species that are not migratory, an Isabela Island cruise is a fantastic experience at any time. Generally, however, the waters are better between January and March, making this an ideal time for avid snorkeling enthusiasts. The driest months are generally between August and December, perfect for beach lovers.
Visit the Galapagos in January to watch green sea turtles coming and laying eggs on the beaches, and in April to find the eggs hatching. Bird spotters will probably prefer to see Isabela Island between August and March, once the number of migratory birds is at its peak. October is the breeding interval for fur seals, whilst brown nodes are sexually active in November. December is the best month if you want to see the hatching of giant tortoises.
Before linking any Galapagos cruises, you will first have to create your strategy to mainland Ecuador. International flights generally arrive at the country’s capital city of Quito, though it’s also likely to take a long flight to Guayaquil. Flights to the Galapagos Islands leave every day from both Quito and Guayaquil. Flights from Guayaquil are shorter, and lots of departures from Quito stop in Guayaquil in route to the Galapagos Islands.
Baltra Island gets the busiest airport around the Galapagos Islands, but flights arrives too at San Cristobal Island. Your tour operator will typically organize transfers from the airport for a cruise departure point from Baltra or by San Cristobal. Isabela Island cruises generally leave from Puerto Ayora, a major port on Santa Cruz Island.
Are there some immunizations recommended?
For the Galapagos Islands there are no required immunizations. If you, however, intend to spend more time in Ecuador, particularly in the jungle, immunization is highly recommended. As this changes from time to time please check with your local health office (or even the Institute for Tropical Diseases) a couple weeks ahead of your trip.
Will we have to swap some money before we travel to Ecuador or after in the country?
Not if you have US dollars. In 2000, Ecuador adopted the US dollar as its official currency. Just make sure that you bring cash bills in great shape with you. If they have tears in them, then they are very likely to be denied.
