Galapagos Islands Weather Averages
Thanks to the confluence of freezing water flows coming from the west, the Galapagos archipelago has an infrequent dry and gentle weather for the tropics and is frequently classified as sub-tropical. This makes Galapagos travel a year-round vacation option. Galapagos climate is considered tropical, cooled because of the Humboldt Current, and is known by two principal periods:
The hot, wet season
Late December to June is considered the warm and wet season, with March and April generally remaining the hottest and wettest weeks. Close to December, the winds fall down and the weather equator changes south towards the Galapagos, causing the westward-flowing current to slow down, reducing the upwelling and enabling warmer water from the Panama Current to wash the archipelago. Galapagos climate is known by rain clouds which develop when the inversion breaks down, and the air gets warm and rises, producing regular afternoon rains. Even during this period; interestingly, the low elevations receive minimal rain.
The colder, dry season
This season, generally known as the “garua season” extends from very late June to December, when it is dry and cool with an increase of cloudier skies and occasional drizzle or mist through the day. August is the coolest month. During this dry season, Galapagos conditions are nice, the water temperature is lower and there are generally clouds on the bigger elevations. Visibility is generally reduced in the water as a result of plankton bloom, but this mixture of conditions generates a much bigger action in the water and also food is abounding. Simply because Galapagos weather conditions are not too hot during this season, it is also the breeding interval for a lot of sea birds and shore birds, iguanas, sea lions and fur seals.
In order to keep the natural beauty of Galapagos Islands, the Galapagos National Park have reduced the number of visitors by requiring operators to wait 14 days before returning to the same area. This usually means that most boats offer alternating itineraries to show as many of the finest Galapagos sites as possible. Escape the crowds and explore the islands on a Galapagos Cruise in small groups and with experienced naturalist guides. Ours Galapagos boat cruises have between 4-16 passengers, ensuring a more personalized service and better experience.
The Galapagos Islands were first made famous when Charles Darwin based his ‘Theory of Evolution’ on his discoveries. Made up of a bunch of approximately 13 volcanic islands, approximately 95% of this area is now a part of the Galapagos National Park system and announced a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
A Galapagos cruise will offer a truly distinctive experience. From the stunning landscapes which resembles something from the Jurassic era, to the endemic wildlife with as much as 26 species indigenous to these islands and within their natural habitat, there is nowhere else in the world like the Galapagos Islands.
Each of the Galapagos’ official visitor sites has something special to offer, but travelers are going to have the ability to experience the best hits — sea lions, marine iguanas, lava lizards, endemic birds — on the majority of islands. Listed below are a few of the most popular spots.
Santa Cruz features the Galapagos’ most populous “town,” Puerto Ayora, and will be the island chain’s most important tourism hub. The island offers people the only chance to experience the Galapagos’ interior high-lands, one of a couple areas to spot giant tortoises in their natural habitat. Even the Charles Darwin research laboratory, a visit to which will be included on each travel, can be located here.
South Plaza encompasses less than one-tenth of a mile in place and is among the Galapagos’ smallest visitor websites. But the very small island, which was formed by volcanic uplift, makes a powerful impression with its color-changing ground vegetation, sea birds and colony of Galapagos land iguanas. The effective male iguanas could be seen standing guard in front of a cactus tree, waiting patiently to provide a hungry female with a part of prickly fruit.
Rabida: creates a bold statement when you arrive at its iron-rich red shore. Just inland is a brackish lagoon where visitors frequently see flamingos, heads plunged submerged to spoon up crustaceans and algae with their bowl-like beaks.
Fernandina, the Galapagos’ youngest and westernmost island is best known for its not-infrequent volcanic eruptions, the most recent of which was in 2009. It’s situated at the locus of the “hot spot” that created, and is still forming and creating, the Galapagos. As visitors step across lava flows and about the massive population of land iguanas, they develop a firsthand understanding of the ancestral roots of the islands.
Floreana is the place you can find the Galapagos’ famous barrel-mailbox at Post Office Bay. For centuries, those seeing the famous Ecuadorian isles relied on the unspoken duty of fellow pirates and whalers to acquire letters to an intended destination. A mariner would leave a dispatch, then pick through the pile for missives he can send (travel schedule allowing). The tradition continues today; cruise passengers visiting the website can depart and take postcards from a (contemporary) barrel. Floreana is home to the Galapagos’ famous barrel-mailbox in Post Office Bay. For centuries, those visiting the famed Ecuadorian isles relied on the unspoken responsibility of fellow pirates and whalers to Puerto Villamil and Nearby Regions – Isabela Island Cruises take in an assortment of interesting things around the large island. Puerto Villamil is a little port in the south east of this island, and it’s home to the clear majority of the island’s population. You can enjoy the fishing-community vibe, sample yummy freshly caught fish, participate with the cheerful children, shop for souvenirs in the stores that are vibrant, and respect the islets that dot the coast. Stroll along the boardwalk, leading through mangroves, and see flamingos, gallinules, whimbrels, and much more. The Tortoise Breeding Center sits at the end of the boardwalk, helping conserve sea tortoises. The harbor is often filled with little luxury yachts and other sailing vessels, many of which carry passengers on exciting Galapagos cruises.
Isabela Island Cruises enable guests to find the natural splendor of the largest island of the Galapagos. Straddling the Equator, Isabela Island is in the western portion of the Galapagos archipelago, close to the volcanic Galapagos hotspot that created the island collection. A lesser-visited area, it is also among the most diverse, which is no mean accomplishment in a place that’s already known for being among the most diverse places on Earth.
Are there any immunizations recommended?
For the Galapagos Islands there are no required immunizations. If you, however, intend to invest more time in Ecuador, particularly in the jungle, immunization is highly suggested. As this changes from time to time please consult your local health office (or the Institute for Tropical Diseases) a couple weeks ahead of your trip.
Will we have to exchange some money before we journey to Ecuador or after in the country?
Not if you have US dollars. In 2000, Ecuador adopted the US dollar as its official currency. Just make sure you bring money bills in good condition with you. If they have tears in them, they are likely to be refused.
