When is the best time to travel the Galapagos?
Galapagos is a location which can be visited at any time. There’s two seasons. The warmest is between December to May when the air is always transparent and the sun shines powerfully. If you like to dive, the best time to visit is somewhere between June and November since the temperatures are a bit cold, will probably have a better probability to see the Galapagos’ famous marine life.
The Galapagos is all time destination, and nature-loving visitors should expect to be amazed by the flora and fauna every month. Still, the 2 main most important “seasons,” each of which has its own draws and drawbacks.
High season, when tourists usually force occupancy levels to the max, is considered mid-June until early September and mid-December through January. From June through November, the Humboldt Current brings colder, nutrient-rich water and (slightly) colder conditions. Regular highs can be about 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Wind and seas are usually a bit tougher. Skies tend to be overcast, but rainfall is rare. The changes in water quality attracts fish and sea birds, making this a fantastic moment to snorkel. Due to the cooler water temperatures — occasionally in the low 60s– using a wet suit is a great idea for swimmers hoping to keep in the ocean longer. This is the mating season for the blue-footed boobies and waved albatrosses.
December until May, the air and water temperature ranges are generally warmer, in the high 80’s, and seas tend to be more calm. Light rain falls for a short period each day, but the humidity is balanced with potent sun rays. Sun-lovers may be proven in February, when tropical heat scorches the lava. Land vegetation explodes, with flowers coming into bloom. Several varieties of wild birds mate during this time period, and sea turtle nesting also occurs.
El Nino, a weather trend, can upend weather-related forecasts, delivering a tropical feel to the atmosphere at unanticipated periods.
How to Get to the Galapagos Islands
The Jose Joaquin de Olmedo International Airport in Guayaquil (GYE) receives flights out of U.S. cities of Miami and New York, European cities of Amsterdam and Madrid, and major cities of Central and South America. Mariscal Sucre International Airport of Quito (UIO) receives flights in the U.S. through Atlanta, Dallas, Houston and New York; from Europe via Madrid and Amsterdam; also out of several major cities in Central and Southern America. We recommend you to arrive at Ecuador at least two days ahead of your Galapagos Cruise begins and grab your international flight home at least two days after your stay in the Galapagos. You can take benefit of these two days by visiting Quito, Guayaquil, or even their environment. As soon as you have your trip to mainland Ecuador, getting to the Galapagos Islands is simple. Located almost 1,000 km (600 miles) from Ecuador’s coast, the only way to travel is by airplane. Whether from Quito or Guayaquil, there are several flights daily that require passengers into the archipelago. You can land on Baltra Island or at Puerto Baquerizo Moreno on San Cristobal Island. TAME, AVIANCA and LAN will be the airlines that operate these routes. If you’re flying from Quito, you’ll almost certainly have a brief stop in Guayaquil in your way to the islands. Reserve your Galapagos tour before you buy flight tickets to ensure correct dates. Check with your Galapagos tour or cruise company for advice on booking your trip to the Galapagos including optimum coming days to the Islands based on cruise/program plans.
Many visitors in Galapagos are surprised to be greeted by desert-like vegetation–many are expecting a continuation of the lush greenery that they witnessed on mainland Ecuador. In fact, the majority of the archipelago’s land area is covered by the brown and gray vegetation frequently located in deserts. The Galapagos Islands are located in the Pacific Dry Belt, and in typical ages just the greatest altitudes of the larger islands receive enough rainfall to support tropical vegetation.
Coastal plants are observed in the narrow zone near the shore and are distinctive because of their tolerance to salty conditions. Mangrove trees are among the most frequent plants found within this zone, and they serve an important role since the breeding sites for many birds, such as pelicans and frigate birds. They also provide much needed shade areas such as iguanas and sea lions, in addition to refuges for sea turtles.
The dry area has become easily the most broad zone in Galapagos and is comprised of plant species which are highly adapted to drought-like states, such as succulent cacti and leafless shrubs that flower and grow leaves only in the short rainy season.
