TREKKING SALKANTAY TO MACHUPICCHU

1st DAY: CUSCO- MOLLEPATA - MARKOKASA - SORAYPAMPA

Early in the morning we pick you up at the hotel to transfer by bus to the Village of Mollepata passing the highland community of Cruz Pata (3400m) and towns of Izcuchaca, Zurite, Ancahuasi into the Valley of Limatambo where we will appreciate the ruins of Tarawasi. Continue to Mollepata where we will begin our trek until arriving at Tres Cruces (three Crossings) where we have lunch with a spectacular view of the Valley of Limatambo, Then we will continue our trek toward Markokasa, Choquekiclla, since these point we will have a beautiful view of snow-capped of Salkantay and Humantay. Arrive to Soraypampa (3700m or 20,671 ft), where we will spend the night in our first camp. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner)

2nd DAY: SORAYPAMPA- PASO SALKANTAY - ARAYANNIYUC

In this day we will pass for the highest point of our trek at the foot of Salcantay, we will see the charming geography zone just under us in the place called Paso Salkantay (4,600 m). If it is possible we will have a Ceremony Inca. This Ceremony is known like Payment to the Land (mother earth) or Pachamama (Jaywarikuy). We take lunch in the point called Huayrac to begin to descend with direction to the Challhuay farm, and to observe at any moment the change of ecological level constantly to Highland Forest, on this point we will have the opportunity to see the most beautiful Andean landscapes and great views of snow-capped mountains where we will arrive to the following camp called Arranyaniyuc (3450m). (Breakfast, lunch and dinner)

3rd DAY: ARAYANNIYUC - WIÑAYPOCO - LA PLAYA

The road is already more stable, basically this day is to descend through a cloudy forest, where the vegetation develops clearly, we will be able to appreciate numerous species of Flowers, between Orchids and ferns, birds of different colors and the opportunity to taste some fruits as the Passion fruit, the Orange, the banana among others. Also we will have the encounter with some ancient families on the road as in Wiñaypoco (2650m) and community of “La Playa” (2100m), where we will spend the night and remained amazed by the beauty of this place. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner)

4th DAY: LA PLAYA - LLACTAPATA – AGUAS CALIENTES

After an early breakfast we will begin our trek in ascent through the Inca Road arriving to the archaeological complex of Llactapata, where we will find a cloudy forest and an exceptional view to the sanctuary of Machupicchu and Waynapicchu. Then descend to the hydroelectric station (1950m). Place to catch the train toward the town of Machupicchu (2050m), where we will spend the night in a comfortable hostel. (Optional) You will have the opportunity to visit the thermal water and take a bath and relax in natural water. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner)

5th DAY: MACHUPICCHU - CUSCO

Early in the morning after breakfast we will take a bus up to the Lost City of the Incas “Machupicchu” (2400m) to appreciate the sunrise. Guided visit to the ruins describing by means of history the important of this place and you will have an extensive knowledge in farming, astronomical and religious aspects. After guided service you will have enough time to continue by your own in the Sanctuary of Machupicchu or climbing to Huayna Picchu.

At indicated hour we will meet in Aguas Calientes railway station to catch the train to return to the city of Cusco. (Breakfast)

WHAT TO BRING - We recommend:

  • A small day pack to carry your sunglasses, sun hat, sun and insect lotion, camera, water bottle, a wind jacket and rain gear.
  • Sleeping bag.
  • One complete change of clothing per day (trousers, socks, T-shirts, and underwear).
  • Sweater and jacket for cool days or nights, gloves and winter hat recommended.
  • Warm sweat pants for evening around camp and in tent.
  • Trekking shoes (please break them in well ahead of time), a pair of sneakers to hang out around camp.
  • Coramina (Glucose).
  • Original passport.
  • A flashlight and batteries.
  • Personal toiletries and medications.
  • Medium sized towel.
  • Peruvian currency (soles) for tips and small purchases along the way
  • Camera gear (ASA 50, 100 and 200 recommended), with enough charge/battery power for the duration of the hike.
  • Sleeping bag

PRE-DEPARTURE BRIEFING

One day before departure our representative in Cusco will contact the clients to provide information and answer any questions they might have about their Inca trail program. We must be informed in which hotels the clients are staying and the date of their arrival.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

Although the trek is rated as moderate, we strongly suggest spending at least two nights before the start of the trek to totally adjust to the altitude.

  • Do some exercise before you go
  • Altitude at the Inca Trail : Minimum 2430m / Maximum 4200m
  • Keep hydrated. Drink Plenty of water that also helps to acclimatize to the altitude
  • The paving on the trail is irregular. Please be careful with your steps.
  • The maximum kilogram per person: 20 pounds/10 kilograms which you have to store in the provided duffle bag
  • We recommend combining the Inca trail program with an Amazon adventure in the species rich rainforests of Manu.
  • The booking system managed by the UGM (Management office for Machu Picchu Sanctuary) is complicated and allows just 500 people including tourists, guides, porters and cooks. That is why it is important to make the booking as soon as possible.
  • No refund will be possible for any unused part of the tour or entrance fee bought in advanced.
  • Entrance fee can not be transferred to another traveler. This is prohibited by law.
  • Park authorities may occasionally designate different campsites than those indicated.
  • All trash produced during the trek will return to Cusco.
  • If you get a new passport after you have reserved a permit for one of our Inca trail programs, please inform us before arrival to make the necessary arrangements with the UGM. Please help us to avoid any inconvenient for your Inca trail experience.

WEATHER

The Andean weather can be unpredictable, despite the sharp divide between dry and wet seasons. The dry season runs from May to October or November (the best time for this amazing trek); the rainy season goes from December through April. Nevertheless, in the forested fringes of the Amazon basin where Machu Picchu lies, showers are not uncommon at any time of year. Therefore rain pants and jacket are essential gear that should always be in your daypack.

Daytime temperatures can vary greatly, from about 10ºC/50ºF to 28ºC/82ºF with nighttimes temperatures from 10ºC/50ºF down to around 0ºC/32ºF, though seldom much lower
